Gone in 60
Seconds is a slow action movie, a description a movie of this type
does not want to have. You would expect to indulge in simple
pleasures like cars, action, and Angelina Jolie, but instead you get
a movie where there is more talk than cars or excitement. This would
not be a problem if the dialogue was even mildly interesting or
sophisticated, but you get some of the flattest dialogue a
screenwriter can possibly spew out.
Nicholas Cage
plays a retired car thief who has to come out of retirement to save
his little brother played by Giovanni Ribisi. The movie revolves
around the Cage character and his gang of car thieves plotting how
they’re going to steal a bunch of cars in a small timeframe. Robert
Duvall plays the veteran car thief and Angelina Jolie plays a very
underdeveloped love interest of Cage’s. Seriously, she is on screen
for such little time you even forget she’s in the movie until she
pops up again in the background. The rest of the characters in the
movie are pretty much inconsequential except for the occasional
amusing one-liner. There are also two very dumb and dull cops who
follow Cage and his gang around in hopes of catching them. This is
the kind of movie that can’t let you think about the plot and has to
be carried by the action, but instead it talks about the plot,
seemingly endlessly which only works to point out how bad and out of
focus the movie is.
Car lovers
will be disappointed; the focus here is not on the cars but on the
car thieves’ passion for stealing them. The final chase scene
involving a 67’ Mustang is exciting, but by that point you are so
jaded by how badly the chase was built up that you almost can’t
bring yourself to care. Nicholas Cage is usually very intense, but
it was hard to believe his intensity in this film, he was never able
to dive into the character as he has done in other films. A very
weak screenplay and lack of action spelled doom for this movie that
could not even be carried by any performances from very good actors.
Everything in this movie was flat, from the actors to the dialogue
to the action. I cannot recommend this movie unless you like boring
and pointless
movies.
