Crystal Vendor in Mérida

One Sunday morning, two of my friends and I were walking down the street at "El Centro" to do some shopping and talking. After walking down 60th street for some time, my friends and I came to a small plaza filled with people setting up their booths for the day. One booth there in particular seemed very interesting. The sound of cut geodes hanging in the air clinking against each other filled the air. The bright colors of yellow, purple, orange, and red sparkling from the crystals caught my eye.

The man by the name of Gerardo Torres owned the booth. Sr. Torres made almost all the creations on the table, from a gold dragon holding a crystal ball to the geode wind chimes and dragon incense holder. Most of the materials that he uses comes from Querote, the rest of the materials come from around town With all these materials he makes his art which cost from a few pesos to a couple hundred pesos. Sr. Gerardo Torres learned how to make his creations in Mexico City and traveled to Mérida almost eight years ago to live and work. With these art pieces he makes his living every Sunday in Mérida.
