More About the Artist
Andy
has been drawing comics almost since he could hold a pencil. His early attempts
at drawing were of people he saw or heard in a story. This was followed by copying
comics from the newspaper. His biggest influence at the ripe old age of eight
was Peanuts and Beetle Bailey. When school would get boring, Andy would doodle
pictures of things he liked just to pass the time. In high school this was replaced
by drawing his teachers based on some comment they made or something they always
did that was eccentric or humorous. One teacher would get angry, bang his fist
on the desk and yell, while the veins on his forehead would stand out. Another
teacher would jump around the room, whistle and sing "yeah for you"
or "boo to you" depending on whether you did something right or not.
And still another teacher would let out a long low whistle and start speaking
in a ficticious language. These were all great sources of many comics that were
drawn during high school.
Comic drawing went on hiatus after high school
while Andy was in the military and college. After working for a few years in
an office with an obsessive-compulsive, paranoid hypochondriac (and other supporting
cast), just out of sheer annoyance, Andy drew a few comics about this person
as a joke, and thus the character of Fife was born. This is when Andy thought,
"you know, I bet I have enough material to do a bunch of comics".
And soon Andy was drawing again. He then added the other characters to round out his office and family in comic form. Years later, Andy is still drawing these comics
every day.
He now gets material from Fife, his other co-workers,
family and friends, and especially his daughters who give him an endless supply
of material. Of course current events and the insanity of some people also add
to Andy's list of comics. And the scary thing about this is that 99.9% of the events portrayed in the comics are real. Most of the time reality is comical enough on its own.
Andy lives in Florida with his wife and daughters. And he thinks that there must be somewhere better
in the country to live than Florida and can't understand why people are moving
there in droves.
The Andyland Comics are not drawn by hand. The
handful of original sketches were done that way. All of the comics are drawn
with a computer graphic program.
