Solar
System
Introduction
Welcome to the Solar
System. You are a team of astronomers hired to examine the planets.
Knowing the planets helps us know what is out there in outer space and
whether life can be retained in our space away from the Earth. It will
be up to us to find more research.
Task
You will be assigned to one of the
9 planets in groups of 3. You will find more information about your
planet and record that information in your Science Journals. You will
also sketch your planet along with the information that you found.
After completing this section in your journal, you will be given a
Styrofoam Ball to create a model of your planet. After designing the
planet, you will get together with other astronomers and connect the
planets in order (closest to farthest away from the sun). I am counting
on you to find additional information about the planets and their
location.
Resources
These websites will help you
find additional information for your planet. Click on your assigned
planet and you will be taken to the website.
Process
- Complete a KWL chart on a piece of paper.
- Review the website (assigned planets)
assigned to your team.
- Jot down new found information from the
website in your Science Journals.
- Given a Styrofoam Ball, make a model of
your planet and label your planet.
- Connect yourself with other astronomers
and put the planets in complete and correct order (closest to the sun
to farthest from the sun).
- Present your planet to the class.
- After this presentation, you will be
given a mnemonic device to help you remember the orders of the planet
and you are to sketch out the planets in this correct sequence.
Evaluation
You will be observed throughout this
assignment. You will be graded according to the following:

Conclusion
You are now a cohort of certified
astronomers. Check your evaluation to see your advance you are as an
astronomer. You should be proud of yourselves for the hard work and
dedication you have made towards this project. You should now know more
information about your assigned planet and other planets in our Solar
System. You should know the correct sequence for the planets from
closest to the sun to farthest from the sun.
Thank you for your participation as you
go on your journey to become informed astronomers.
