iTunes

Background

The iTunes store is owned and operated by Apple Computers. Just recently they opened up their online music store to the Windows community too. Within just a few months Apple had sold over 6 million songs.

Formats

When you purchase music from iTunes it is in the secure AAC format (at 128kbps). This allows them to make sure you can only play it on 3 other computers (but as many iPods as you want). As far as sound quality goes, it sounds just as good as MP3 (even a bit better at times).

Prices

Their prices start at 99 cents per track and $9.99 for most full albums.

Size and Selection

iTunes boasts a respectable 400,000+ library of songs, not including over 5,000 audiobooks for the reader on the go.

Overall Experience

Although the software itself is a bit clunky and rough around the edges, the store itself is a pleasure to navigate. You can easily search, find the latest tunes added, and even check out celebrity playlists (to see what your favorite muscians are listening to!). On a side note, be careful when installing because I choose to import my collection into iTunes and it decided to rename all 2,500 file names and categorize them into folders (without my permission!).
