My experience teaching first level has been a great challenge. As we know, most of our students are afraid to learn a second language because they are not confident enough of their skills. Once they learn in class how to work with their own tools (skill to grab the pace of the speech, skill to memorize words, skill to make quick relations among cognates, skill to follow grammar rules, et cetera), they are confident enough to participate in class.

My experience also tells me I should be proud of my Latin American accent when I speak English in class. This particular characteristic has helped my students not to be afraid of speaking Spanish with an accent when they practice in class. If any one asked me for my ideal methodology of teaching Spanish, I would say “wait and see how your class is, and then build one with all the teaching methodologies we have learned in school”.
