A
little bit about myself
My name is Ericka
Ghersi and I am from Perú. I grew
up on the north coast of Perú (Piura y Tumbes).
Then we moved to Lima where
I did my bachelor’s in Mass Communications (Journalism and Film Studies)
in Universidad de San
Martín de Porres and Universidad de Lima. Once
I was done with my studies, I worked for two important newspapers: El Peruano
and Cambio. In both places, I worked for their respective cultural sections not
only writing about literature and film, but also interviewing well-known Latin
American writers, and later on designing the cultural page. At that time,
Universidad de San Martin de Porres published my first poetry book: Zenobia y el
Anciano.
However, I felt I
needed to do some more, so I decided to study Literature. I went to Ohio (USA) and
I got a master’s degree in Spanish Literature at Bowling Green State University. Very
excited with the scholar life in the United
States, I started my
doctorate in Latin American Literature at the University of Florida. Once
at the University of Florida, I
published my second book of poetry: Contra
la Ausencia. I also published my poems in several
reviews, magazines, and anthologies in Latin
America and Europe, and
you can find some of my poems translated in English and Italian as well.
At the University of Florida I
teach Beginner Spanish and Advanced Beginner Spanish
classes. You can reach me at the Department
of Romance Languages, University of Florida, 321
Yon Hall. Check my schedule on the current course I am teaching if you want to
see me, or we can set an appointment at eghersi@ufl.edu.
Besides my
professional life, I am a mother of a
baby girl named Alexandra. Here
you will find pictures taken by me of Alex and her daddy. Being mother, wife, writer and student is not
easy, but all these parallel stages make my life more challenging, and
challenge is what people need in life to feel alive.
