First Research Skills Assignment

Case assignment (Lexis exercise):

1. Go to UF library webpage,

2. Click the link to Smathers Library,

3. IF you are off campus, go to the off campus access link (in the middle column) and follow the instructions, then skip to step 5 (below)

4. IF you are accessing the library from on campus, go directly to step 5

5. Click the link for Databases

6. Click the link for Databases A-Z,

7. Click the link for L, or scroll down to L

8. Click the link for Lexis Academic

9. Click the link for legal (at the top of the screen),

10. Click the link (on the left) for federal and state cases

11. Conduct your search

 

Remember: The search parameters are that you are looking for cases from Florida (state and federal cases) from the period Jan 1, 2008 to now. The search phrase is: right to counsel

For your assignment turn in a sheet with the name, and cite for three cases:

 

The first Supreme Court case on the list

The first 11th Circuit case on the list

The first state of Florida case on the list (hint: Florida cases will have a cite form that looks like this: 22 Fla. 113)

 

If you have problems, drop me a note. Do NOT assume that I will answer questions about how to do the assignment on Tuesday morning before class. So ask before that.
