Book Assignment

The three books we have read so far this semester (Sparrow, Polenberg and Ngai) all describe the way laws changed over time. Each, in fact, describes a variety of influences that led to changes in the law, though each also emphasizes the importance of particular influences.

Pick two of those three books and write an essay exploring the types of change that they describe. You should be sure to identify the chief influences of change the books you are writing about describe. But you should also identify the less important influences in the books, and discuss their relation (if any) to the chief influences. While it is important to identify the various causes of legal change in each book, your essay should not just be a list of changes in Book A and a list of changes in Book B. Rather, you should compare and contrast the theories of change in the two books you pick to write about.

Please be sure to cite your sources (from the books, once again I do not wish you to use outside sources). Otherwise, consult the syllabus for details on the length of the paper.

• The assignment is due in class, at the start of class on Tuesday, March 4.
• Everyone is required to do this assignment, even people doing the long research paper.
• Papers should be typed, double spaced, normal margins and normal fonts.
