While academic institutions such as the University of Florida must hold steadfastly to their roles as bastions defending the freedom of expression and the exchange of bold and sometimes very uncomfortable ideas, the editorial cartoon appearing in the Alligator on September 13 crosses the line.

The use of gratuitous and stereotypical images that unmistakably conjure up memories and feelings of hatred and intolerance is unacceptable. The implied messages run counter to UF’s core principles of promoting and building a diverse educational environment where students, staff and faculty members of all origins can rightly and truly feel they are members of the community in every sense of the word.

The programs in the university’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences confront and explore issues of race in classrooms and in research. We do this both as academics and as members of the Gainesville community and oppose all forms, actions and symbols of intolerance.

We must all strive to address the distinction between stimulating controversial discussions, and creating a climate of disrespect in which fruitful discussions cannot take place. As the voice of the student population here at UF, I hope the Alligator will be more mindful in the future of how its words impact our community and learn to use its constitutional freedom of speech more responsibly.
