Kingston USB Root\tbird-setups.txt TBird V15.0 with Update on 11/19/14.
This is a summary of how one can run Thunderbird (TBird)through the UF's
Exchange on a micro running Win 7 and 8.1. Five sets of TBird settings
follow; one is for Google mail on a micro running XP. The laptop
settings have worked at a number of locations in Gainesville and
elsewhere. Important caveats based on testing IMAP and SMTP settings with
TBird 34.0.B1 and Exchange:
1. Someone must create an Exchange mailbox for you. This individual is
in your department or college IT support group. This will give you
an account named USERID@mail.ufl.edu on the UF's Exchange server.
2. Your micro's firewall, if any, must be set to recognize TBird.
3. TBird will have one folder named Inbox after the initial setup.
Additional folders will have to be created as preferred: see
http://www.mail.ufl.edu/managemail.shtml for details.
4. If you created a large number of folders on the mail server
you are replacing with Thunderbird on Exchange, you may wish to
delete any current installation, reinstall it, and use the IMAP and
SMTP settings shown below. In the new configuration, you may wish
to store copies of sent e-mail in a folder named "Sent Items".
Copies in Sent Items will be kept for 365 days and then automatically
deleted without warning, as is the case for e-mail in your Inbox.
Details are at www.mail.ufl.edu/servicespec.shtml in the cagegory
Retention Periods.
5. Mail that came to your prior e-mail server should be forwarded to
USERID@mail.ufl.edu from that system. If you do this, you will not
have to notify e-mail senders that USERID@mail.ufl.edu is your real
e-mail address. For example, GatorLink "Account Status" at
https://service.gatorlink.ufl.edu/modify/show_details.cgi shows
where your Gatorlink e-mail is being routed. Click on the first
option in the list at the left, "Email forwarding" to change it.
6. If any IMAP or SMTP setting is incorrect, Thunderbird returns an
error message saying it can't open or find that server, e.g., if
the SMTP server is correct, viz., smtp.ufl.edu, but one of the
other specifications is wrong, the error message says the SMTP
site cannot be found or opened.
7. TBird has an "IMAP server directory" field that is blank by
default: Go to Tools-->Account Settings-->Server Settings-->
Advanced. The first field in the pop-up is for your server
directory. Leave it blank and do not change any other settings
in that pop-up. On other servers, e.g., the former NERSP, you
had to set it to "mail/" or TBird would populate your session with
the hundreds of subdirectories you had in NERSP.
The actual names used for the Google settings have been changed
to Fname and Lname and UserID equals the Exchange user ID.
