University of Heidelberg 2005-2006

In the Fall of 2005 a course on the Geography of North America was given at the Center for American Studies of theUniversity of HeidelbergGracious sponsor was the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which has supported my teaching and research projects in Germany also in past. 

 

I enjoyed teaching a variety of students coming from countries as diverseas the Maldives Islands , Kazakhstan , Belarus , Georgia , Romania , Poland , China, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Germany, Canada … and even, some Americans.

 

In addition, an upper seminar on “El Niño and other Contemporary Climate Variabilities” was given at the Institute of Geographyofthe University of Heidelberg , with the participation of brilliant studentsfrom Germany , Luxembourg , Afghanistan , and Colombia.  A highlight of these stimulating academic encounters was thecelebration of a  symposium organized by our host, ProfessorBernhard Eitel on January 25, 2006, to discuss the state of the arton the detection and dating of palaeo-El Niño events and theircultural impact along the west coast of South America.The fruitful interaction with with Professor Eitel and his associates,Dr. Stefan Hecht, Gerd Schukraft, and Bertil Mächtle deserve my  warmest appreciations.

 

Berlin - Summer 2006

From April to the end of July, the activities were housed atthe Institute of Geography of the Humboldt University in

Berlin, sponsored by the German Service of AcademicExchanges (DAAD). A course and a seminar each on Natural

Hazards and onClimate Variability in Present and Past Times were given tohighly motivated students.

 

 

In a solemn ceremony to commemorate the Annual Day ofGeography, on May 23, 2006,a replica of a statue of

Alexander von Humboldt – the great naturalist of Germanyand that university’s main patron – was unveiled by

the director of the Institute, Professor Elmar Kulke, and byCesarCaviedes, as invited professor and

representative of the New World , where Alexander von Humboldt foundtheinspiration for many of his theories

about the processes and laws ruling the natural environments.
