Learning Web Design
Hosting Space
This page is being hosted for free by uf under my gatorlink account. All of us here have a page at http://www.plaza.ufl.edu/username. Use an FTP client like Classic FTP to upload your files and get started. When you open the FTP program it will ask you for some basic info. Host is plaza.ufl.edu (just like that, no www, no http://). Username and password is your gatorlink username, and password.
Getting Started
Begin with simple text, write out all of the various parts of the site, determine the structure of navigation, pages, etc. Make a simple layout of your design graphically, adding images where appropriate.
Remember the basic 5 steps
- Start with content, raw text.
- Give the document structure, visually lay out spacing
- Identify text elements, use h1, h2, h3, p, ol, ul, blockquote....
- Add and Image
- Change the look with a style sheet
Guidelines
- Use at least 10 different elements that we have learned
- Use the concepts of Semantic Markup to organize and structure
- Use Style Sheets to change the appearance of the document, reference this color chart for the color codes.
- Due Friday, Oct 9
- Eventually you will all register and maintain your site at your own domain, Fat Cow is a good, cheap hosting company at $4/mo!
