Tier 1 Pathology Phenotyping

The objective of Tier 1 Pathology Phenotyping is to identify changes in tissue structure, circulating blood, serum biochemistry and pathologic lesions associated with the mutation or other genetic modification induced by the investigator.

The standard tier 1 pathology phenotype includes thorough gross and microscopic examination of organs and tissues (see below). All gross and microscopic lesions are identified, graded, and photographed. The final electronic report provided to the investigator includes a written summary of all findings, gross photographs and histopathologic micrographs, and an interpretation of the findings relative to the genotype of the mice. The findings and results of tests are held in strict confidence and are released only to the investigator.

Additional tissue analysis of interest to the investigator as well as procedures including immunohistochemistry, special stains and transmission electron microscopy can be provided by mutual agreement or upon request for additional fee.

It is recommended that serum clinical chemistry and hematology also be conducted (see below). The investigator can either submit blood and serum samples separately to the Animal Care Services lab, or we can collect samples and submit them as part of the workup.

We will be flexible in working with the investigator to tailor our pathology support to meet the needs of their research protocol. For instance, if only a small number of animals are available for study, we can collect tissues and data in the investigator's laboratory while they are taking samples for their studies. Alternatively, the investigators can collect the tissue set and record body/organ weights and forward fixed tissues to our lab for histopathologic analysis. Submission forms for mice and fixed tissues are available.
Contact Drs. Castleman or Reinhard if you have questions.

Services not provided: Except under special circumstances, we do not provide fetal and embryonic death diagnostic support since this often requires extensive support personnel and diagnostic breeding procedures.
