Fireworks Tips and Tricks Vertical and Horizontal Drop Down Menus in Adobe Fireworks!

  1. Create an image/button that you would like to use drop-down menus.
  2. Insert a slice to the image by clicking on Edit/Insert/Slice. You will see a bright green slice. Right click on the slice and click on Add Pop-Up Menu
  3. Double click in the text filed under the content tab and enter the name of the menu item.
  4. Click on the '+' symbol to add more menu items.
  5. Click on Next when you complete entering the menu items
  6. You will now be taken to the Appearance tab. Here you can specify the color of the text and cells and font size. Here you can also specify if you would like a horizontal or vertical drop-down menu
  7. Click on Next. You will be taken to the Advanced tab where you can specify the cell padding, border color and shadow.
  8. Click on Next again. In the position tab you can specify how you would like the drop-down menu to appear. You can choose to have the menu appear from the bottom right or left of the slice or above the slice.
  9. Click on Done.
  10. Choose File/Preview in Browser. You will see the drop down menu on rolling over the button.
  11. Export the images and layout by clicking on File/ Export and choose the location where you would like to store the files. Open the folder where you stored the files and you will find that fireworks creates a file called mm_menu.js which has the code for the drop-down menus. The menu items will be coded in the head content of the page.

Photo Cropping in Adobe Photoshop!

Step 1:

What I will be demonstrating in this tutorial is how to crop a image. Very basic tool for you to keep in mind when working with photos. All we have to do basically is grab the main attention out of the image and display it in a more wider position.

Step 2:

Go outside with friends or family and take a few random pictures to work with. Or if you don't have any at the moment, just take the one provided above. You want a image that has a lot of attention going towards one figure like the skateboarder in this picture.

Step 3:

Let's start off by grabbing your Rectangular Marquee Selection tool in the top left of your toolbox. Simply select a small portion of what you want to be displayed more than the rest of the picture. Mine is obviously the skateboarder, we don't want to see the crowd!

Step 4:

Once you have selected around the part of the image you want to keep, hit Ctrl+C to copy. Now go to File > New on the top. It will automatically put it in the right measurements if you copied correctly.

Step 5:

Now since you have a brand new canvas, hit Ctrl+V to paste the copied document you had in before. Now all the rest of the image should be cutout besides the main part. Again, this is a very basic tutorial for beginners at Photoshop.

WhaWhat is a PDF? a PDF?

PDF is an acronym for "Portable Document Format." It is an open creation by Adobe Systems, as a successor to its very popular PostScript and was created so documents could be viewed on the Web in the same format as would be seen if printed. Besides static text, however, PDFs can contain color, graphics and multimedia objects such as sound and video.

To view PDF files, you will need the free viewing application, Adobe Acrobat Reader available for most platforms (Macintosh, Windows, Unix, etc.).

    How to Create PDF Documents

To create PDF documents, you need access to Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Professional( not Acrobat Reader). Acrobat Professional is installed in all ITS labs, and is integrated with the print function from applications. Acrobat Professional is also available for purchase from the Microcomputer Order Center (MOC).

The general steps to create a PDF in Windows:

    1. Open or create a file with Microsoft Word.
    2. From the "File" menu choose "Print".
    3. In the list of printers, choose Adobe PDF.
    4. When prompted, name and save the file.

The general steps to create a PDF in Macintosh:

    1. Open or create a file with your word processor choice from the "Word Processing" folder. We will assume Microsoft Word.
    2. Save the document file (name.doc) and then pull down "File" to "Print."
    3. Change the print "Destination" to a "File" and when prompted save the output on the desktop. This will create a postscript file (name.ps).
    4. Open the "Presentation" folder in the "Software" folder and double click the "Acrobat Distiller 4.0" icon. Be sure the "Job Options:" setting is "ScreenOptimized."
    5. Drag and drop the postscript file on the desktop to the "Acrobat Distiller 4.0" tile in the lower left portion of the screen, or pull down "File" to "Open" and select the file created in step 3. This will create a PDF file (name.pdf).
    6. To view the PDF file, simply double-click on the icon created in the prior step which will then open the "Acrobat Reader 4.0" or drag and drop the icon on the "Acrobat Reader 4.0" tile on the desktop.
    7. If you want to edit the PDF file, open the "Presentation" folder in the "Software" folder and double click the "Adobe Acrobat 4.0" icon, then drag and drop the PDF icon on the "Acrobat 4.0" tile on the desktop.
