Study Skills

Reviewing and teaching study skills to ESOL students is especially important when those students come from a low literacy background.  They may not already have a working knowledge of how to study effectively or what strategies to use in order to maximize efficiency during their study times.  Teachers can teach these study skills overtly by increasing student awareness of the existence of the skills, modeling their uses, practicing in class, and explaining the benefits of each one. Students working in every content area can benefit from the use of general and specific study skills such as:

Every content area probably also has its own set of study skills that are important to understanding that content area.

**Reflect on your own content area and consider what important study skills students studying in your area need to know. Please note that this is a self-reflection and does not need to be submitted to the facilitator.
