Lesson Plan Sequence

The primary focus of Academic Competence, Part B, is making reading in the content areas comprehensible for ESOL students. Comprehensibility can be increased by following a lesson plan sequence that proceeds from

• prior knowledge to new knowledge;
• concrete to abstract;
• oral language to written language (texts);
• more contextual support to less contextual support.

An easy way to follow this lesson plan sequence is to use the method "Teach the Text Backwords." However, the broad general nature of the recommended sequence allows for the creative and unique teaching styles of all teachers.
