Module 3: Introduction to Culture, Part B

This survey was designed so that most respondents in the US will have more "a" responses than "b" responses. However, there is usually significant individual variation with specific items in the survey. People may vary in the extent to which they attribute success to hard work or to luck, for example. Or they may disagree about the relative importance of using time efficiently. But in any given group of people in the US, most respondents will have nine or more "a" responses - indeed it is not uncommon for individuals to have all "a" responses.

What this exercise illustrates is that, although US culture allows for relatively great variability among members, there are strong underlying values that most Americans share. People's personal characteristics, e.g., age, gender, ethnicity, formal education, influence their individual choices on the survey, but their membership in US culture means that they have accepted most core American values.
