Key Factors for Successful
Inclusion
If the inclusion model is the only one available to your ESOL
students, there are some key factors that can make this type of
program successful:
- teacher collaboration
- common (weekly) planning time.
- comprehensive staff development: after students are
placed, to solve specific problems, and to modify curriculum and
instruction to meet student needs.
Discussion Questions: After reading about Thomas and
Collier's research on pages 43-45 in your Study Guide, answer the
following questions. You may submit your answers to the facilitator
using either the downloadable document or p. 46 in the study
guide.
- How does your school provide bilingual support for your ESOL
students and what additional native language support could the
school provide?
- What program model do you think is most appropriate for
students in your school? Give a rationale.
