The US EPA's LMOP Program:
The
United States Environmental Protection Agency encourages the usage of
landfill methane
as an energy source in order to keep the methane out of the atmoshpere.
The EPA website
describes the program as such: “The U.S. EPA's Landfill Methane
Outreach Program (LMOP)
is a voluntary assistance and partnership program that promotes the use
of landfill gas as a
renewable, green energy source.”
LMOP has been a very successful program in accomplishing it's goals of
reducing landfill
methane emissions in the United States.

To date LMOP has assisted in developing more than 258 Landfill Gas
Utilization Projects.

To date the 285 projects have prevented the release of 18 million
metric tons of carbon
equivalent. This is equivalent to taking 14.5 million cars off of US
roads.
