"The flow, which turns out to be the main point. Not the passages I am moving through, however beguiling, but the sheer pleasure of movement. "(flow)

Scratchankle is situated on the banks of the Blackwater River, a large river with several tributaries that runs along the panhandle in Northwest Florida. The Blackwater River provides water and nutrients to the surrounding area, making Scratchankle a place of diverse plantlife and wildlife. It is because of this that the dewberry, which is the reason Scratchankle had acquired its name, had been so prevailant in the area. Because of the abundant wildlife, hunting and fishing became very popular in Scratchankle. Before laws were passed against it, it was not uncommon for a father and his son to hunt or fish every weekend. Of course, this led to problems in the ecosystem of the Blackwater Forest and the Blackwater River itself. Eventually, in an attempt to ensure that this landmark ecosystem was not destroyed, the State of Florida made the Blackwater River State Park directly outside Scratchankle. Before this could take place, however, Scratchankle would realize its potential to make money off the forest. Because of the abundance and diversity of the trees, as well as the river, Scratchankle was well placed for the lumber industry.

Presently, the Blackwater River is a major source of recreation for the town. People from the area swim in its many tributaries, camp along its shores, and tube/kayak/canoe down its many facets. Boating and jet skiing are also common in the main river. In fact, every Fourth of July a boat show is hosted along the Blackwater River, ending in Milton(Scratchankle). Also, one of the most popular sites in Milton(Scratchankle) is the Riverwalk, a boardwalk with gazebos, picnic tables, benches, and a war memorial.
