It’s August of 2018 and I am very nervous about my first day at my new job, which starts bright and early tomorrow morning. Ever since I began teaching I knew that it was the field for me, but I never anticipated becoming Principal, especially at my age! This school is in dire need of reform and I hope that I am up to the challenge of restructuring it creatively and efficiently.
Time has flown by since I graduated from the University of Florida with my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. I had no idea what I was in for when I began my first job, and I had no idea it would lead me to this day... awaiting the 6 o’clock alarm to chime so that I can begin my first day of work here in Long Island. I hadn’t anticipated leaving Florida to live here, but when you marry a New Yorker, its hard to drag them away from their state!
My position as Principal was, admittedly, unexpected and probably undeserved. Typically someone of that position has far more experience than I do. However, with the public school system in such peril, school boards across the nation are looking to younger educators such as myself to help overcome the struggles of the last decade. Although this is an extremely busy time for me, what with the baby and the publication of my second novel, I hope that I can zero in on the problems and make the difference in L.H.I. Elementary School. My staff and I have discussed the idea of a five year plan filled with drastic but exciting changes in the way this school is run, and I look forward to devoting time and energy into this... I suppose my writing may have to wait for a while.
My husband and I are determined to balance our jobs with the responsibilities of a family, and we are excited for what is to come.
