Giraffe

  


    Giraffes are mammals with long legs and necks.  Their necks are made up of many individual vertebrae.  The use their spotted fur as camoflage to hide from preditors.  They also have up to three horns, called ossicones, on the top of their heads for playful fighting.

Facts

Height: Males up to 19ft.; females 16ft.
Weight: Males 2400-3000lbs; females 1600-2600lbs.
Food: Their long necks allow them to eat leaves from tall trees, especially acacia trees.  They can go for days without water because they get mostiure from these leaves.
Habitiat:  African savannas (grassy lands)
Family groups:  Travel in herds with all ages and genders.
Threats:  Hunted for prized fur, tails(for good luck bracelets and string), and meat. Destroying their habitat and growing human populations are also threatening the giraffe.
