Research StatementAs a member of the UF On-Line Institute my research focuses on solving fundamental problems related to on-line learning and training using innovative methods and technologies. The students of Geology 101 experiment with fossils, the students of Numismatics 305 study the collection of historical coins in the University library, the students of History of Art 201 interact with the exhibits at the University gallery, but the on-line students in all these case just read lecture notes with pictures! This leaves significant room for improvement and innovation using 3D digitization methods, 3D reconstruction and analysis of shape variations, cost-effective dissemination of 3D collections, and natural user interaction with the 3D digitized educational material. Similarly, the interaction and collaboration between on-line and on-campus students can be improved using shared virtual environments for interaction utilizing technologies such as depth cameras for live motion tracking and 3D human body reconstruction, as well as devices that generate haptic feedback. The 3D reconstruction of the human body and its motion pattern analysis can be applied to many areas directly related to learning and training such as physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Short BioAngelos Barmpoutis is currently an Associate Professor in the On-Line Institute and the Digital Worlds Institute at the University of Florida. He is also the coordinator of research and technology in the Digital Worlds Institute, and affiliate faculty of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Department and the Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Florida. His current research projects focus on interdisciplinary applications of computer science and engineering to the service of the broad areas of learning and training. Prof. Barmpoutis areas of expertise include machine vision and applications, virtual reality in medicine and education, human motion capture and analysis using RGB-D cameras (such as Microsoft Kinect sensor), and image processing and visualization. Dr. Barmpoutis has coauthored numerous highly cited journal publications, conference articles and book chapters in the aforementioned topics, and has received several awards and grants from various funding agencies including the US National Endowment for the Humanities, and the US Department of Transportation.
