Hello, my name is Andrea Chavez and welcome to my website. I attend The University of Florida and this website is an assignment for my Writing Through Media class. We focus primarily on the works of Shakespeare and it’s adaptations. My website mostly includes blog posts and pictures about the Shakespeare plays we have read in class. Now, while my entire website is not accessible for people with disabilities, this page is. I will post links and information to include the other parts of my website on this page. I’m striving to have a very accessible and friendly website, and I hope everyone can enjoy. Thank you.

A Review Of My Website

This part of the page shows what my website is all about. Every week we would be assigned a different Shakespeare play. Throughout the week we would read the play, have in class discussions, and watch or read an adaptation of that play. Below I have two of my favorite plays: The Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet. For The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You is the 1999 adaptation. And for Hamlet, The Lion King is the 1995 adaptation. For the Shakespeare plays, I posted a link to their Wikipedia articles. Where you can read summaries and learn about the plays history. For the adaptations, I posted links to their movies trailers.

A Wise Choice

Even though this assignment is late and I’ve missed classes lately, I did work very hard. This assignment was a lot harder than it seemed on paper. However, I was very excited to get started and I learned a lot about how to make a website, or a page, that is accessible for people with disabilities. I never truly thought of or knew how difficult it would be for disabled individuals to access and view the Internet. I did Prompt 1 and in addition to the websites you told us to review, I also did my own research. From the start I knew I wanted to do some type of audio or video. After several attempts of trying to videotape myself, I decided audio would be better. But I know if the blind needed to hear it, then the deaf would need to read it. So I typed what I said in the audio onto the website. I also read that any time you put a picture, you should describe the picture to the audience.

I really wanted to put an accessible keyboard on this page, I thought it would make it complete. Individuals who have issues using a mouse could access my website. However, it was very difficult. I tried several times but I couldn’t get the JavaScript to work correctly. I did get the JavaScript to work when I put in tabs to increase and decrease the font. It’s important for people who cant see well to increase the font on the page. I wish I could have set the audios to auto play, but there are two and they would have played over each other, which would be confusing. It took a lot of work, but I am very pleased with how the page looks AND sounds!
