Another requirement is that you have to be a U.S. citizen in order to receive food stamps. You can search online for calculators or tables that can help determine if you can apply for food stamps based on your income. Your income would also determine how much in food stamps you will get. Those making no income would receive the most food stamps as opposed to those who are working and making some income.
There are two ways you can get food stamps. The easiest way is to apply for food stamps online. There are several websites that will help you to apply for food stamps online. A quick search on Google should give you a list.
The other way to apply for food stamps is to get an application, fill it out, and drop it off at your local Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) office. You can also fax or mail it to the office if you wish. You will also need to bring identification and pay stubs to show your income. You should also bring along proof showing your expenses. For example, your mortgage, child support payments, and medical expenses. You can expect to wait up to 30 days before you find out if you were eligible for food stamps.
The food stamps can't be used for everything. For example, you cannot buy non food items like pet food or household items. You also cannot buy medicine, tobacco, alcohol, or food at the restaurant.
