About Me
I have been at the University of Florida since I received my B.A. from Baylor University in History and Classics in 2004. At UF I have earned an M.A. in Classical Philology and am currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Classics Department. My dissertation, "The Rhetoric and Conceptualization of Enmity in Classical Athens," focuses on hostile relationships and violence in the literature of classical Athens (5th-4th century B.C.). I defended my dissertation on February 26, 2010, and will graduate in May.
My primary focus in research is on ancient history and related fields, but I have enjoyed studying a broad range of other topics, including Homer, Augustan Poets, and textual criticism. I am fascinated by the parallels (and lack of parallels) between Greek and Roman law and politics; I hope to do some more work on this subject soon.
As a teacher, I have had opportunity to participate in a vast array of courses. Although I have been the primary instructor only for Greek and Latin language classes, I have helped out with numerous lecture classes. I am looking forward to the opportunity to design and teach my own classes in the future.
My time at UF has been very productive and useful. The Classics Department here is exceptional in many ways, but not least in the degree to which our faculty and graduate students enjoy Classics and think that it is is a field worth studying. I have been very lucky to have spent time in two such programs (Baylor and UF); the feeling has rubbed off.
